A market back home is inspired by a childhood memory shared with me by a Peruvian immigrant living in London. She remembers visiting her local market with her mother, surrounded by vendors, handmade objects, animals and the everyday activity of a place that remains vivid years after leaving Peru.
Rather than recreating a specific market, I interpret her recollection through fragments of memory and imagination. The mother and daughter’s story becomes the starting point for a wider scene, while the artisan who dominates the composition embodies the people, craft and everyday encounters that form part of her memory of the market.
My own dogs recur throughout this developing body of work. Although they do not belong to the original memories, I introduce them as a personal thread connecting stories from different people and places, reinforcing that these paintings are interpretations rather than literal reconstructions.
The work explores how ordinary childhood experiences can, through time and distance, become lasting connections to family, culture, community and a place once called home.
