Market Back Home is inspired by a childhood memory shared by a Peruvian immigrant living in London, recalling visits to a local market with her mother. Vendors, handmade crafts, fresh produce, animals and the everyday activity of the market come together as fragments of a place that has remained vivid in her memory years after leaving Peru.
Rather than recreating a specific market, the painting interprets her recollection through colour, imagination and storytelling. It forms part of the Childhood Memories series, exploring how immigrants living in the UK remember the places, traditions and everyday moments of their childhoods across Latin America.
