Little Candles Back Home draws on the artist’s childhood memories of Día de las Velitas, a beloved Colombian tradition when families and neighbours illuminate their homes and streets with candles and colourful faroles.
At the centre, the artist appears as a child playing hopscotch, surrounded by fragments of family life and celebration: neighbours sharing arepas and buñuelos, glowing lanterns, a familiar yellow taxi and the humble brick home of her childhood. Her late grandmother appears within the scene, while the artist’s childhood dog and one of her present-day dogs exist side by side, deliberately bringing different moments in time together.
Part of the Childhood Memories series, the painting explores how memories of home are preserved and reconstructed over time — where people, places and small everyday details can continue to coexist long after the original moment has passed.
